Making memories

Part of the reason I started this blog was so that I could keep track of the memories and stories of our newlywed days.  Time flies by so quickly, and soon enough, this first year of marriage will be a distant memory.  But I want to create a time capsule of our marriage so that we can look back on these days when we're older and weathered, and smile back at these first memories.

Last week, Sy and I went to go buy our very first Christmas tree together. I had never had a fresh tree growing up. So Sy and I agreed that for our first tree as a married couple, we would do it right and get a real tree with that good old pine smell.  =)

Here is Sy bringing home our tree!

As I walked beside him, I couldn't stop smiling looking at him carrying that tree on his shoulder. He looked so strong, so manly. In that moment, I felt safe knowing that he was my husband and he was going to be the one to take care of me for the rest of our lives. And this man would be the one who would swoop up our future children into those arms and carry them on his shoulders.

We laughed as we walked back to our car. Sy said that something about carrying that tree made him feel super "married," and how this was such a married thing to do... buy a Christmas tree off the street and carry it home on your shoulders.  We only wished that it could be snowing to make it just perfectly quaint.

I hope we will always remember this first Christmas. It was such a sweet and funny night.

Sharing is caring

An interesting thing happened yesterday.  Sy and I were checking out a new church, and after the service was over, I noticed that there was a table with coffee and munchkins free to take.  I immediately gravitated towards this table, happily grabbed a munchkin, and walked back to Sy as I munched and ate it.

Once he saw me, he asked me, "You only got 1 munchkin? You didn't bring me one?" And I realized, I didn't think about him whatsoever, or if he might want a munchkin.  And I should've known... who doesn't want a munchkin?

But here's the back story.  I've been going to my previous church for 10 years.  And for 10 years, I've had the same routine.  After service, I go get a munchkin, talk to some friends, then go out for lunch.  I never had anyone to think about to bring extra munchkins for.  So, out of force of habit, when I saw these munchkins, I just went for it.  It may have been a different location, but to me, it was a revised version of my old routine.

I felt bad after he pointed it.  (Especially because he continues to point out that I'm not really good at sharing.)  I admit it.  I'm not good at sharing.  I've never been good at sharing.  I do it... but reluctantly.  Maybe it's because there was never surplus treats for me growing up. Or maybe it was because my sister is 4 years older, so for many years of my life, I felt like an only child and didn't have to share.  But either way, I'm bad at sharing.  I'm aware of this shortcoming of mine, and I do work on being a more sharing person, but it definitely doesn't come naturally, and it comes with a lot self-chiding to make myself a better person.  Hence - I forgot to get my own husband a munchkin.

I realized that my reluctance to share is also tied to my overall selfishness.  I like being selfish.  Therefore, I don't like to share.  It's my munchkin.  I found it.  You didn't. Go get your own!

Sigh, marriage just keeps on revealing how selfish I am.  It's not a fun process to see your sins exposed, but worse - to have to try to do something about it. Sometimes, when Sy and I are sitting on the couch watching tv, I will want to snack on something, and I forget to offer him some.  A large part of me wants to defend myself and say, just ask for a bite!  No need to get stinky at me because I forgot to offer you some!  But when I think about how I would feel if the tables were turned, and he perpetually forgot to share with me, I'd be sad too.  When I turn things around to how I would feel (again, so selfish!), then I really begin to understand how it feels to be on the receiving end of selfishnes.

I really hope that in this first year of marriage (which they say is the hardest year of marriage), we will work out all our kinks, and I will burn away much of my selfishness for the sake of a loving and caring marriage.  Sharing really is caring.  I just gotta care for him more.  Wish me luck!

Selfish shellfish

Hello blog world!

soooo... big news!  i got married!  =D  (i know, it's been way too long since i last wrote in this blog.)

while i was on honeymoon, i had trouble sleeping at night, and all these thoughts kept coming to my brain, and i realized that i wanted to write these thoughts down before i forgot all about them and life steamrolled over me and then all of a sudden another year had gone by.  i considered starting a new married journal, but then i realized that i remember my blog entries a lot more clearly than i do my journal entries.  and with these new married thoughts in my head, i wanted to make sure i remembered them - to really value and learn from them.  i'm sure, soon enough, i'm gonna just be another married lady. but while it's still fresh to me, i want to recount and remember all of these feelings and thoughts so that when i look back on our years of marriage, i can see the growth, the love, and the memories.  so i've revamped my old blog - a new look for a new chapter of life! here we go!  =)

i think a big thing i kept thinking about while on honeymoon was the notion that i am a selfish person.  now, i'm sure you're thinking, DUH, mia, we're all selfish. but to be really honest, i kind of always thought of myself as a very selfless person, someone who was sacrificial to the point of being detrimental to myself.  but i learned that i am actually quite selfish - and maybe i don't always act on it (which is good), but it's there - lying inside me like a seagull waiting for a beachgoer to look away for one second and then steal his food.

i saw it come out on our honeymoon.  it was my first time in both greece and paris, and there were so many things i wanted to see, do, eat, experience.  i didn't want anything to prevent me from achieving these things.  but the key thing is - i wasn't on this trip alone.  i was married now.  my desires now have to be vetted with the guy who married me, and he has to be okay with going along with everything i wanted to do.  and here's the shocking part - i had to be okay with his desires too - even if they didn't match mine.  and this is where i ran into trouble.

i realized that in my mind, i easily agreed that i should do what he wants to do bc i love him, and i want him to be happy. but then, when it came time to actually go through with it, my inner being was like NO!  What about me???  and i realized that even though we had dated for a good amount of time, i was used to living my life for myself.  my life was my own. i did what i wanted. and sure, there's the occasional acquiescing to your parents' requests, or sacrificing some stuff for a good friend, but to know that from now on, my life was not just mine anymore - it was ours - it freaked me out.

i know that i want to be a good, little wife - the kind that sy will be proud to have, and his mom will be proud to call me her daughter in law, and the kind i'd be proud to be.  but man, i didn't think it would involve so much of this internal transformation.  i thought all i had to do was cook some instagram-worthy meals, keep a tidy apt, and be a pleasant person.  but nope!  there's a lot more going on when you look into the ocean of being a wife.

there's a lot to learn, and thankfully, i've got the rest of my life to figure it out.  but... i hope i can speed up the process for sy's sake and our marriage sake so we can have a wonderful and beautiful marriage forever and ever. it's not fun to see the dirty sins of myself - but i want to be a better person for him. i really hope that God's grace will transform me into a wife that brings glory to my husband and to Him.  wish me luck!

Day 20-22 - A Weekend of Thanks

Sorry again for not blogging! it's been a busy weekend, and i seem to just crash into bed instead of remembering to blog!

Day 20 -Fri
today, i am thankful for birthdays.  it sy's birthday weekend, and we have a whole lot of plans.  tonight's included dinner with his church friends and drinks with more friends.  i spent a lot of the night just watching him, watching him laugh with his friends, talk animatedly, joke around.  i could see how happy he was to be surrounded by the people he loves most.  and i thought about how the night before, we had spent the night with his family celebrating with them.  and he was so happy to celebrate with his adorable nephew.  even though sy isn't big on birthdays, and even though it's not my own birthday to celebrate, i do think birthdays are worth being thankful for.  it's once a year in your life that you get to be shown love without it having to be weird or awkward; and people have an excuse to spend time with you amidst our busy schedules; and we get to build lifetime memories.  it's almost like a sabbath - except within a year's time, and for the purpose to stop and celebrate and honor someone you love.  =)

Day 21 - Sat
today was an extremely low key day.  today, i am thankful for good deals at stores.  haha!  i know it sounds so silly, but rite aid was having a sale on vitamins of buy 1 get 1 free!  i mean, come on, how often in life can you get something for FREE?  i saved myself $14!  i love a good deal.  i love knowing i saved a lot of money.  i love buying things and knowing i beat the system somehow.  and i can't wait to go back to buy some christmas decorations bc everything is on sale for 25% off!  i'm going to make my apt a christmas winter wonderland.  it's gonna be great.  and it will not be full price!  yay!

Day 22 - Sun
today i am thankful for family.  you know, sometimes it's easy to forget how much they love you and care about you bc it's easy to focus on their annoying sides, or the selfish things we do innately.  but then there are those times when only your family knows what must be going on in your head and knows how to give you the perfect solution to your stress - without ever having had to say a word.  i think there are so many times that i want to run away to california, avoid having to deal with family stress on a regular basis because i do remember these negative times more.  but on nights like tonight, i am so grateful for family and their ceaseless support and sacrificial love.

Day 19 - one small bite for mia, one giant step for food!

Today I am thankful for being able to eat my first real meal. I was nervous all day that I would not be able to eat anything at sy's birthday dinner with the family. I didn't want to be rude considering his mom went through all the trouble to make all this korean food. But I legit haven't eaten since mon.  And my soup lunch today did not sit well with me. But praise the Lord I was able to eat!  I even felt hungry and ate an entire plate!  It felt like a small miracle.  You know, I know I love food and I don't take it for granted ever. But now that I have had such an aversion to it for the past few days, it felt so good to enjoy taste again.  Yay!  Here's to eating well the rest of this birthday weekend!!

Day 18 - home is where the heart is

Today I am thankful for 2 things.

1. I got to work from home today and it was glorious.  It was nice to be able to do my work while lying in bed and not having to noonchee (be cognizant of) my co workers for being so lazy looking.  Bc I'm not!  I'm still recovering!  I think I really needed this day to gain some more strength before I have to sit in a cube for 9 hours straight.  I'm feeling much better now!

2. Sy and I just finished watching True Detective!  It was a great little series.  We got hooked right away and watched it super fast. I love good tv. I love being sucked into stuff.  It's exciting to have something to look forward to!

Oh... and maybe thankful point 1.5 - I've lost 4 lbs from this stomach thing.  Hooray!  I know I'm gonna gain it all back but it was nice to see my stomach a little flatter and to see the scale go down.  Haha!  Ahhh... if only I could keep it off!
